Cessnock, the largest town in the Hunter Valley, is a perfect base for exploring Australia’s oldest wine region. Just a 30-minute flight from Sydney, Cessnock offers easy access to over 150 cellar doors in the area, including some of the oldest vines in the country. You can tour the vineyards, or ride through them on horseback, take a Segway tour along historic routes, or rent an electric bike to explore the area’s extensive bike paths, including the scenic 10-kilometre cycleway along Hermitage Road.
Foodies can take part in a cheese and chocolate trail or join one of the region’s many cooking classes on offer. Several local businesses can put together a luxuriously styled spread at one of the Hunter Valley wineries. You could try your hand at painting en plein air at a private session inspired by the wineries.
